You see ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) every day, though you might not realize it.
They are childcare providers, home health aides, grocery clerks, delivery drivers, teaching assistants, warehouse workers, restaurant staff, and more. They keep our communities running. They work hard, often multiple jobs with low pay, no benefits, and unstable hours. Still, it’s not always enough.
At the heart of ALICE’s struggle is a simple mismatch: the cost of living continues to rise, but wages haven’t kept pace. In Wisconsin, 1 in 3 households couldn’t afford basic needs in 2023. That includes 11% in poverty, and another 24% who are ALICE: earning too much to qualify for help, but not enough to get by.
When we truly see ALICE—the people behind the numbers—we can start building a community where stability is possible for all.
