ALICE (an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) is a way of defining households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a basic household budget.

The cost of living is outpacing these neighbors, even as they work hard 40+ hours a week. (Maybe you can relate.)  

According to the latest ALICE data, more than 1/5 of Wisconsin Veterans struggle to afford the basics. Living below the ALICE Threshold is a reality for many veterans right here in the Fox Cities. It’s about real people, real challenges, and a real need for solutions. 

“We have seen a significant increase in Veteran need since 2020,” said Tim Cody, President of the Fox Valley Veterans Council. “Our numbers have gone up every year, and this year has been at an all-time high. Inflation and lack of affordable housing are the biggest drivers of these numbers.”  

One local veteran had to leave his family for extended treatment. While he was away, the stress of looming unpaid bills and eviction loomed over his family. The FVVC stepped in with temporary assistance so they could keep their home and focus on moving forward.  

This family is not alone. The Fox Valley Veterans Council has seen many veterans dislocated due to rent increases; the transitional housing market has been full, and waiting lists are long. Last year, the Fox Valley Veterans Council connected over 300 veteran families to resources and provided over $200,000 in financial assistance to uplift those who have served. 

Capturing the true extent of financial hardship helps United Way and the community learn where to focus our efforts. United For ALICE shows us that 34% of Wisconsinites live below the ALICE Threshold of Financial Survival.  

Financial Stability is one of the building blocks of opportunity. By making community resources available through organizations like the Fox Valley Veterans Council, the veterans in our neighborhoods can get to solid ground and stability.
